Paralympics: Japanese judoka Shizuka Hangai wins 48-kg silver in Paris
Japanese judoka Shizuka Hangai wins a silver medal in the women's 48-kg category at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris on Tuesday
Hangai defeated Gulnoza Sayitova of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals and then beat former world champion` Sandra Pocher of Austria in the semi-finals.
However, she lost to London 2012 bronze medalist Dursadaf Karimova of Azerbaijan in the final and had to settle for silver. This is Hangai's first Paralympic medal, and her silver medal adds to Japan's total of 16 medals so far at these Games.
In 2018, Hangai won the gold medal at the Asian Para Games in the 48-kg category. Recently, she won the 48-kg bronze medal at the 2021 IBSA Grand Prix in Georgia.
The Paralympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, is a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. The Games are held every four years. The 2024 Paralympic Games will be held in Paris, France, and are expected to attract athletes from over 160 countries.
