Sarah Wellbrock Retires from Swimming Career at 28
Former Olympic Medalist and World Champion Ends Illustrious Career
Wellbrock, one of Germany's most successful swimmers, announced her retirement on Wednesday at the age of 28. The news comes as a surprise to the swimming community, as she is still considered to be one of the world's top swimmers.
Wellbrock, who competed under her maiden name Köhler until 2022, won an Olympic bronze medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2020 Tokyo Games. She also won a gold medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2022 World Championships and a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2022 Short Course World Championships.
She is the current German record-holder in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter individual medley. Her retirement announcement comes just a few months before the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where she was expected to be a contender for multiple medals.
Wellbrock's decision to retire is a major loss for the German swimming team. She has been one of the country's most successful swimmers in recent years, and her absence will be felt at the upcoming Olympics and World Championships.
