Mumbai on High Alert for Continued Heavy Rains
City Faces Waist-Deep Flooding and Service Disruptions
Mumbai, India's financial hub, is on red alert as torrential rains continue to batter the city. Since Monday, several parts of Mumbai have been inundated in waist-deep water, causing widespread disruption and evacuations.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the low-lying areas of Mumbai, exacerbating the already severe waterlogging.
The incessant downpour has severely disrupted suburban train services, which are a lifeline for commuters. The closure of schools and colleges has also been ordered, as safety concerns mount.
In Maharashtra, over 84,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations in the city of Pune. The deluge has also impacted the eastern district of Yavatmal, where around 110 people have been stranded due to floods in the Mahagaon tehsil.
Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions. Emergency services have been deployed to assist affected areas and evacuate residents as needed.
The heavy rains are a stark reminder of the need for robust infrastructure and disaster preparedness plans, particularly in densely populated urban environments like Mumbai.
