The Origins of Decoration Day
On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, a prominent Union Army veteran, proposed the establishment of a national day of remembrance. The first official Decoration Day was observed the following year, with communities gathering at cemeteries to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.
Evolution into Memorial Day
As the years passed, Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day. In 1971, Congress officially designated the last Monday in May as a national holiday to honor all Americans who died in service to their country.
